Wheel Alignment
Steering and suspension geometry, better known as wheel alignment or tracking has an important role to play in maintaining road handling and therefore vehicle and occupant safety. As with all aspects of motor vehicle technology, steering and suspension systems have received much attention from vehicle manufacturers over recent years in their quest to provide increased levels of vehicle performance and improved ride quality.
Vehicle manufacturers have always specified geometry checks and adjustments after certain repair work has been carried out such as track rod end replacement but because of the more sophisticated steering and suspension systems, reduced working tolerances and improved roads and road surfaces steering and suspension geometry checks are beoming a more important part of routine servicing work.
The advantages or correct steering and suspension geometry are as follows:
- Reduced tyre wear
- Improved tyre grip
- Reduced road and tyre noise
- Improved handling
- Improved stability and cornering
- Increased fuel efficiency
- Increased vehicle speeds
- Reduced stress on other components
- Reduced driver fatigue
We recommend steering and suspension geometry checks and adjustments are carried out after the following repair work:
- Track rod end replacement
- Drag link replacement
- Drop arm replacement
- Steering rack replacement
- Suspension lower arm replacement
- Suspension ball joint replacement
- Shock absorber replacement (where camber adjustment is integral with the damper)
- Road spring replacement
- Subframe removal or replacement
Additionally we recommend steering and suspension geomery is checked after a vehicle has been in a collision or has been subjected to repeat exposure to speed humps or pot holes.
Using our advanced Hofmann Dynaliner 4000 optical 2/4 wheel aligner we can quickly and accurately check and adjust the steering and suspension geometry on virtually all passenger cars and light commercial vehicles even if they have been lowered or have custom steering or suspension set ups.
Our 4 wheel alignment equipment will allow us to perform the following checks and adjustments:
- Front and rear wheel toe
- Front and rear wheel camber
- Caster (Steering wheels)
- King pin inclination (Steering wheels)
- Included angle (Steering wheels)
- Set back
- Steering wheel centralisation
Steering geometry checks are carried out as part of the Salisbury FastFit program, designed to keep vehicles where they should be, on the road.
